Indy Film Library (IFL) has announced its third annual Experimental Showcase. Starting 09:00 CET on Monday 28th August 2023, the two-week exhibition of international short films shows the ingenuity of independent artists, who have defied budgetary and political constraints to deliver some genuinely out-of-this-world cinema.

Chief Editor Jack Benjamin commented, “Since founding IFL, I’ve found a new appreciation for experimental films. They get an unfair reputation for being obtuse and exclusionary, but the best films in this field simply dare to ask us as viewers to think – there is stacks of meaning in each of these films; they just aren’t going to baby us when it comes to spelling it out.

The six short films selected for IFL’s third Experimental Showcase exemplify just how diverse and complex this form of art is – but also how certain universal themes run through all human lives, however different they might be. This year there is a common thread of memory passing through each movie: characters warmly remembering loved ones as they stand in the rubble of the present, wishing they could change the past with their knowledge of what is to come, and confronting a terrifying reality as their memories start to desert them.

“As much of our popular media looks to brush the trauma of the last three years under the carpet and move on without learning anything, helping us re-examine our concept of memory with fresh eyes is worth its weight in gold,” Benjamin added.

Films have been selected on the basis of both the imagination involved in their constructions of meanings or themes and the technical skills exhibited by their cast and crew, in a celebration of the under-appreciated world of experimental cinema.

All the films will be available to view for free via the Indy Film Library website – before the Best ScoreBest CinematographyBest Film and Best Director will be announced. Meanwhile, viewers will also have the opportunity to select the winner of the Audience Choice Award.
