Indy Film Library has announced its first annual Halloween Horror Showcase something which will not only demonstrate the fearsome talent among up-and-coming Indy filmmakers, but also give our dedicated readers something to watch amid the continuing Covid-19 restrictions.

Indy Film Library Chief Editor Jack Brindelli commented, “Over the last year, Indy Film Library has seen many glimpses of the independent film industry’s bright future, but we always feel we could be doing more to support the incredible diversity and creativity found here. We plan to offer up more genre-based events in the future, but what better place to start than horror – the place where Indy Film has most often out-flanked Hollywood?

“One of the staple themes of horror is the loss of our identity. When a story’s protagonist finds themselves sliding inescapably into a cycle of endless, violent consumption – be that as a werewolf, vampire, zombie, wendigo or many other hideous fates – perhaps the most disturbing idea the audience will be confronted with is ‘what if this loss of self could occur to me?’ While several of these films might not be what some would consider ‘conventional horror’ then, this core essence of losing oneself looms large in all of them – something which is extremely pertinent amid the current pandemic – the effects of which have seen millions of people lose control of their bodies, either as a result of the ravages of Covid-19 itself, or the mental health crisis which the sustained isolation of lockdown has wrought on our social species. On top of the thrills horror can give us then, it also provides us with a vital platform through which to explore our deepest fears, and help us address the most pressing social issues of our day; something I am proud to say every part of our Halloween Horrror selection does at some level.”

For two weeks, starting 09:00 CET on Monday 19th October 2020, Indy Film Library will be streaming some of the best short horror films we have received over the last year.

Films have been selected on the basis of both their storytelling and the technical skills exhibited by their cast and crew, in a celebration of the often under-appreciated world of student cinema.

All the films will be free to view via the Indy Film Library website – before the Best Film and Best Director in the Narrative and Experimental categories will be announced. Meanwhile, viewers will also have the opportunity to select the winner of the Audience Choice Award.
